Here students don't just "do Social Studies." Instead they experience history through the lens of historians and learn though cooperative group work, student-centered lessons, and reflective notebooking.
One of the most important parts of teaching middle school is the building of trust and respect. Flexible seating, classroom jobs, clear expectations, and engaging lessons are the cornerstones to ensuring my students feel safe and can therefore learn.

The "pat" on the right instructs the "pleb" on the left on how to best prepare mosaic tiles. Though this lesson, students captured the feeling of what it was like to live the early days of the Roman Empire.
To assess their knowledge, students use their notes from the text as well as any activities we completed to tie all their learning together at the end of a lesson.
Students got to choose out of several projects to learn more about Ancient China. Student choice in leads to ownership and engagement.
